Charley Jeffcoat alias Charley Johnson haunts the Savannah river swamps in Burke county after killing Deputy Sheriff Flanders in Emanuel and the South Carolina deputy earlier. Posses scour the region from Georgia to South Carolina with large rewards posted by authorities and families for his capture.
A 27 year old Kansas City man George Francis claims to produce 20 to 25 carat gold from five acids, three powders and seven chemicals. He says a backer will fund the Francis Chemical Gold company to build a local plant and sell batches at 75 and 35 dollars each.
Washington dispatch reports United States Minister Bowen forwarding a plaintive plea to the State Department for the poor in Caracas suffering from the protracted war. The Reverend M. Pond, senior American missionary there, notes unprecedented poverty. Bowen says he is feeding a hundred or more destitute people.
Brenton's Point reports Admiral Higginson's fleet launching an attack on Navagasett Bay defenses this afternoon. The Marblehead fired the first shot with bow guns, followed by mortar batteries at Fort Adams returning fire. The squadron split, with Massachusetts Indiana Puritan moving east while Kearsage and Alabama stayed offshore.

He cites tariff policy as the force behind trusts and urges Democrats to stay focused on tariffs to win. Whitely, who runs a large operation employing about 3,000 workers, notes a shift of many Republicans to the Democratic side.
