In Santa Cruz County Superior Court three former officers were found guilty of second degree murder in the Bates case. Sentencing set for October 28 at 11:26 by Judge W A O Connor. Jury foreman Thomas M Cumming led the deliberations after a short noon adjournment.
Local managers of the steamer Merida owned by Valley Camp Shipping admit the ship was lost in Friday night’s gale on Lake Erie. Seven crew members were recovered midlake. of twenty three aboard, no survivors are known. The tragedy follows other steamers sunk in the same storm.
