Insurance scheme may cost unions millions
A Senate subcommittee heard that eight states may see multi million losses from an insurance operation run by Joseph Hauser. Investigators said as much as 11.7 million in premiums from union members 1973 to 1976 were diverted to firms tied to Hauser and relatives. The Teamsters Central States fund could lose up to 7 million, with 39 million in premiums collected and 13 million unaccounted for across 20 union funds in eight states. Hauser fled prior probes, then built a larger insurer network, triggering calls for scrutiny of industry standards and laws. The probe notes a 1.1 million unexplained Swiss payment linked to Hauser.

Laser phonograph uses no needle in Japan debut
Tokyo AP reports a laser based record player shown at the All Japan Audio Fair. A tiny laser beam reads 54 000 grooves on a 12 inch disc at 1800 RPM, converting grooves to sound with no needle wear. Developed by TEAC's Hiroyuki Motohashi, it could cost about 566 dollars per unit, but production may start in five years.
