A German dispatch reports turmoil as leaders of Schwarzburg Rudalstadt and Sburz Lippe are ousted. The government debates a socialist shift with calls for broad enfranchisement and the soldiers at the front to vote, amid unrest and fear of reactionary elements.
Postmaster General Burleson ordered a telegraph rate reduction effective January 1. Night message tolls drop to 20 cents for 10 words with 1 cent per extra word for short distances and 50 cents plus 2 cents per word for long distances. day rates are halved.
Assoc Presa Lenced reports Ulf asks the armistice terms be loosened to allow economic ties with the Rhine left bank. Dr Solf, foreign secretary, cites Germanys need for coal iron ore potash and Rhine transport and for free navigation and rail traffic in occupied territory. He warns without changes Germany could slide toward Bolshevik conditions and notes failed talks with Allied powers.
A group of children in the department of the north discovered a box of British ammunition. Upon attempting to open it a heavy explosion occurred, killing four children and injuring several others.
News from Kiel reports Allies passed through the Kiel Canal en route to England. Nov 19 claims two hundred killed in Wahnsied explosion southeast of Otay. Paris says French forces under Petain entered Metz amid public enthusiasm. Rumors suggest German Emperor Wilhelm II may be in publication debate as government weighs isolation war stance.
London reports rumors that former German emperor William II may return to Germany. Berlin and Dutch press stir fear of a counterrevolutionary center uniting with the new rulers to curb his influence. Allied papers warn of a plot to trap the Allies and create a broader German federation with William at its head.
American troops enter Landres and celebrate as liberators. First Division headquarters awaited orders near a German bath house and a large brick bakery, while Lieut. London Nov 18 The surrender program, agreed by British and German naval authorities, calls for the ships to serve German ports on Wednesday and be taken over by the Allies on Thursday King George and the Prince of Wales to review the grand fleet at Rosyth Wednesday. The meet will sail to the rendezvous for the surrender ceremony.
The first section of the German fleet left Kiel for the North Sea on Sunday. It includes battleships Bayern Grosser Kurfuerst Krpoupring Wilhelm Markgraf Konig Albert Kaliserin and battle cruisers Seydlitz Moltke.
