A disturbed Kansas political scene centers on a governor candidate accused of a violent act and of evading a campaign pledge to marry if elected. Voter trust hinges on the unfolding controversy as allegations surface.
J W Bailey the Kansas governor elect says he cannot find a wife and must wed to occupy the new executive mansion. He sought a Kansas bride as promised to voters while D J Hanna the lieutenant governor elect pledged to find a Kansas wife too but argues he is not bound. The mansion, funded at 70000, is to be used for social events and the state expects a hostess.
In Columbia Missouri this morning Colonel Ed Butler faced testimony in his trial for attempted bribery of Dr. Albert Merrill a St. Louis board of health member. Merrill said Butler urged approval of the municipal garbage act by the health board and offered a 2400 dollar bribe.
In Chicago on November 12 more than three hundred Ellsworth cereal plant employees walked out and organized a union. They demand higher wages and better conditions.
The body of John W. Mackay arrived in New York today aboard the Oceanica, accompanied by his widow and daughter.
At the Ford caper mine near Georgetown California two men John M Buchler and Thomas Marstin were killed when twenty sticks of giant powder exploded in a blacksmith shop Monday night. The blast tore the men to pieces and demolished the shop with the powder being primed by Buchler at the moment of the explosion.
SHAMOKIN Pa Nov 12 The Burnside shaft with seven hundred workers is on fire. A large force fights the blaze as miners escape unharmed and all workers are accounted for.
Secretary Root received word that a Catholic priest was killed by a volunteer officer in the Philippines. The army inspector found no justification. the officer cannot be tried by military or civil process. Captain Brownell of the Twenty sixth Volunteer Infantry is named, reportedly in Boston postal service.
In northern Manitoba heavy snow forced Doukhobor pilgrims to seek shelter in barns and outdoors at Shoal Lake Village. A noon visit found the main camp in distress with scant food, while the fifty forerunners begged supplies. They refuse to discuss returning to their settlement.
In Parkersburg a farmer John Wilgus and Mrs Lizzie Griffin wed after three days of acquaintance. Each says spirits guided the match through messages from deceased spouses, and they believe their union was ordained in the afterlife. The second Mrs Wilgus now inhabits a home in Proctorville.
A slate for promoting major generals is set to fill vacancies from next year’s retirements. General Hughes retires in April, General Davis in July, and Lieutenant General Miles in August. Miles will be succeeded by General Young, while Wade Sumner and Leonard Wood are named brigadier generals. Wade is expected to take command of the Philippines from Davis.
The Honolulu election results show the Republican ticket winning notably Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole elected Delegate to Congress. The Legislature will lean Republican in both houses. Republicans claim the home rule party is finished as voters split along party lines. A grand jury is sworn to probe defalcation charges in Territorial departments.

Charles Faunce a 35 year old painter was instantly killed in the Patent Office building in Washington D C this morning when the elevator shaft weights descended.
In Victoria British Columbia a collision between the passenger freighter Rosalie and the freighter Fingal damaged Fingals port bow. Fingal ran ashore to prevent foundering and now lies on the beach while Rosalie continued on.

John McAtee, a Louisville native with gaming debts, attempted to rob Frank H. Lane near Lane’s Kansas City home. In a ten minute struggle over a revolver, McAtee killed himself after realizing Lane was his old friend. Lane, who had been forced to halt, fought back but survived.

The case of Mrs. Charlotte N. Schermerhorn of New York and Connecticut against her son Alfred E. Schermerhorn of New York for repayment of money spent on his education at Yale and a European wedding trip is before Judge Wheeler and a jury in the Superior Court at Litchfield. She says about $6,000 was spent. he contends the money was given, not lent. Both parties own summer homes at Southampton and are very wealthy.
W. Godfrey Hunter has tendered his resignation as minister to Guatemala and Honduras. Leslie Combs, now pension agent at Louisville, will succeed him. Hunter has had a stormy time since he assumed the ministry in 1897. The salary is $10,000 a year.

Jacob F. Diehl twenty a nephew of ex mayor Conrad F. Diehl and son of Henry Diehl millionaire master of the city was last night struck by a vitral thrower. Earlier Miss Gertrude Axmacher nineteen was attacked nearby and may lose sight in both eyes with facial disfigurement. Neither victim has identified enemies.
Chicago. After becoming engaged to two women and promising a New York mansion, S H Swan known as the Beau Brummel of the Windemere left Hyde Park hotel with unpaid bills. On November 27 the Windemere will auction his trunks and belongings. The trunks reportedly hold letters from many guests that could fuel divorce cases. bidders are said to be women or their agents. Swan departed after promising to settle his bill. he vanished with his clothes, letters, and assorted wardrobe.
Recorder Carroll D. Wright left for the coal region with the companies replies to President Mitchells charges. The documents show the firms will resist arbitration committee actions to recognize the miners union.
Press Roosevelt secretary and physician passed through Pittsburg en route to Memphis to hunt with President Fish of the Illinois Central. A large crowd greeted the presidential party as Roosevelt walked the station platform and waved to crowd control. No stops planned for Cincinnati or Columbus.
