Edward Kereford visited his wife in Kansas City on March 22, took their baby, and placed three dynamite charges on the wife’s shoulder then in a fire causing a blast that blew her through a wall. His escape was followed by mob threats and his capture a hour later. The baby’s fate is uncertain and the wife’s injuries may be permanent.
Meriden Conn March 22 The Rev Warren Perkins pastor of St Pauls Universalist Church was vindicated by 250 parishioners at a meeting to address charges over his pen chant for speculating in stock He acknowledged his fault but said he had a right to buy and sell on margin as long as it did not interfere with his ministerial duties His confession won him many friends and he is described as democratic in manner and an attractive preacher.
Cambridge defeated Oxford in the fifty-ninth boat race with a time of 19 minutes 9 seconds. The Oxford crew included the Milburn brothers from Buffalo New York, the first pair of Americans to row for Oxford in this contest.
In York on March 22 Alois Spinner, grieving father of a 16 year old boy, acted on revenge rumors and attempted to kill Dr. Samuel Landsman. The boy died of cerebral meningitis and bronchial pneumonia after a hot bath failed to save him. Spinner, restrained by authorities, claims he cannot forgive the sight of his child reaching out.
Martins Ferry Ohio March 22 a known resident was shot and killed at his home by his son George 22 after a quarrel sparked by intoxication at McDermott Tool Works where the father worked. The son armed a mantel and fired twice. the victim died instantly. The son a noted local athlete and football player was seized by the mother and restrained during the attack.
The thirty fourth anniversary of the University of California founding was celebrated with day and afternoon exercises. Perry, editor of the Atlantic Monthly, was the speaker of the event.
Danville reports Miss Mary E. Brown slashed her throat from ear to ear with a razor this morning and is in serious condition. Authorities say she may have suddenly become insane and have tied her hands to prevent further violence. She is 25, weighs 150 pounds, with a head described as unusually small for her size.
