Wild gas well at Spindletop wrecks derrick in Beaumont

A spectacular blowout at the Forward Reduction Company well on the Keith Ward tract at Spindletop Beaumont Texas demolished the derrick and created a 10 by 12 foot excavation under the floor. The well reached 860 feet before the eruption drove drilling gear into a hole and sent rocks and gas skyward for hours. No injuries were reported though the derrick was destroyed and the field filled with gas, mud, and water as the well choked off.
