Mayors Split Over ERA as Murphy Defends Opposition
Tucson Mayor Lewis C. Murphy opposed the ERA at the U S Conference of Mayors meeting while about 600 ERA supporters picketed the Community Center. The conference approved a pro ERA resolution by voice vote with only 5 to 10 of 150 mayors in opposition. Murphy urged study of the issue, citing Senator Sam Ervin’s warning about shifting power from states to Congress, and Santa Barbara Mayor David T. Shiffman estimated a potential federal cost of at least 142.8 billion dollars for approving the resolutions.

Two Die in Tucson Auto Crash Involving Mexican Reporter
A Tucson cab driver Everard R. Sweetser 55 and Mexican reporter Mario Alcantara-Arrellano 39 were killed when Sweetser’s cab was struck by James F. Gentry 49 who ran a stop sign at the Campbell Avenue Irvington Road intersection. Passenger Luis R. Gomez-Barrientos 41 and Gentry were in guarded condition. Alcantara-Arrellano worked for El Sol de Mexico.

Clifton police chief tied to seized guns display and sales
Police in Clifton disclosed a stash of machine guns and revolvers linked to Lane a former police chief. Officers including Barquin Perea and others reported purchasing guns from Lane while federal agents seized weapon crates and investigated the sales without required registrations.
