Brodie pledged to serve all the people and promote Arizona resources, while stressing careful, economical administration. He appointed George H Smalley private secretary and signaled no sweeping removals.
In Duryea at the William A colliery during the anthracite strike Antonio Guisuipe an Italian was shot and killed by a coal and iron policeman from behind the stockade. Disparities exist over motive with friends saying he was merely walking near the stockade and fired on, while another account claims he attempted to climb over the fence after warnings to stay away.
United States District Attorney Gould announced in probate court that William S. Yateman once a disbursing clerk in the War Department died April 20 1901 as a defaulter. Taunton Mass July 1 Jane Toppan the confessed murderess of thirty one persons passed a quiet day in the Taunton insane asylum where she was received yesterday. She talks rationally and preserves a quiet demeanor. Sheriff Hull Barnstable says she is not as crazy as generally thought and acts as rationally as anyone. She made a remark on the trip that caused him to smile about Mrs Cash and the statute requiring a female companion for commitment to an asylum.
Akron Ohio July 1 a silk lined basket left on the porch of J S Train residence contained a baby boy with note reading My name is Firest Stevens born June 8 Take care of me for my mother's sake The infant was dressed finely and Mrs Trainer took the child in to care for and possibly adopt but the baby has hung fever and may die The parentage is unknown.

A spirited blind horse hitched to Benjamin Sapenstein's junk wagon ran away on West Washington Street in Indianapolis. It plunged through construction barriers and into White River with the wagon and driver Simon Joseph. Joseph was rescued with a crushed hip and internal injuries. Nicholas Connelly helped rescue the horse, lost his clothes to the current, and demanded payment from Sapenstein who settled after police protected him.

He declares he is not afraid to die and hints at further details he wished to reveal but stops writing as melancholy sets in.
