Lieut W Starke of Company B Seven ty Regiment, Richmond, arrested on charges of sending an obscene letter to President Roosevelt. The note included a nude cartoon and a vile line about a black man. Starke admits writing the letter but says the picture was placed in the envelope by someone else.

Jealous lover murders bride then shoots self in Indiana
Henry Clements of Knox Indiana killed his rival's wife Mrs Edward Davis a bride of a few days near a railway crossing in South Bend and wounded himself in a self inflicted shot. The victim Miss Hawkins aged sixteen was cousins with both men. Davis and Clements had both loved her and married her December 21. Clements was arrested and remains in custody as his wound heals.

Ship Wrecked on the Lake Near Ludington
The Marquette Railway Company's steamer No. 3 struck a harbor bar and foundered in nine feet of water during a southwest gale. Nine passengers and a crew of thirty were rescued by the life-saving crew using a breeches buoy. The wreck lies 191 feet from the end of North Pier and 200 feet from shore as waves crash over the decks. The vessel is rapidly freezing into ice.
