No English classes required for Bridgeport welfare recipients

Hartford UPI reports that Bridgeport officials cannot compel Spanish speaking welfare recipients to attend English classes to qualify for benefits. Bridgeport had ordered 150 recipients who do not speak English to take language classes, but only 6 enrolled.

Arizona Hears Growth and Transport Plans for 2000

Gretchen Fogel named new chairman of Pima Democrats

Gretchen Fogel won the Pima County Democratic chairmanship on the second ballot in a vote of 300 precinct committee members. She succeeds Judy Berman who resigned for personal reasons after 11 months. Fogel pledged four daily hours of work, new headquarters, active election involvement, and fundraising while noting party rifts have healed.

Ex POWs allege Cuban torture at Hanoi Zoo camp

Former U S prisoners of war claim Cubans tortured inmates at the Hoa Lo prison camp known as the Zoo near Hanoi. Retired Col Leo R Thorness says fellow prisoner Earl Cabiel was smashed into a catatonic state and died after refusing to eat.
