City shuts down pumps as Beat the Peak cuts water use
Tucson officials report 2.42 billion gallons used last month, down from 2.49 billion in July 1976, despite 2,500 more customers. The Beat the Peak program shifts outdoor watering to morning hours, reducing late afternoon demand and allowing some pumps to be shut off. Reservoir levels stay about 90 percent full, delaying expansion spending and cutting debt and future rate increases.
