Des Moines reports more than 4000 Western Union telegraph poles broken across Iowa due to recent storm and floods. Superintendent Leon W. Ainsworth says total pole and equipment losses reach $280,000, with repairs in Iowa costing about $300,000. Over 700 men are employed daily to repair the havoc.
Passengers aboard the New York from Southampton encountered caterpillars at table, in bed, overhead and underfoot three days out. The caterpillars, carrying parasites intended to combat the brown tailed moth, escaped from a broken box at sea and are being delivered by the government to spread the parasites on the pest.
Wm Devore of Seeleyville was brought to safety after a mob of about 300 people attacked him over an alleged assault on William Judson. Sheriff Shephard and deputies clashed with the mob to protect Devore while Sheriff Walsh and a deputy squad rushed from the city responding to a telephone alarm. Devore and Judson were long standing enemies.
The Mauretania again cut time on the Liverpool mail run to New York, finishing Quarantine with 4 days 16 hours 65 minutes from Daunts Rock to Ambrose Channel Lightship, averaging 25.84 knots. This followed her third midnight arrival, 68 minutes faster than the previous best.

An explosive gas explosion in the Makowska mine in the Don district of Russia killed fourteen miners. At the time, about 150 workers were inside the mine. Rescue operations and investigations followed.
