He describes calculating test costs, setting an average request price, and telegraphing figures to branch houses. Lester admits frequent talks with Francis A. Fowler about test costs margins and shipments and says shipments to struggling branch houses would usually be cut. The government cites coded telegrams from Chicago to Eastern reps to show price fixing, many signed by Fowler.

Poet and Soul-Mate Quit

New York, Feb. 18. Meta Sin clair, wife of Upton Sinclair, and Kansas poet Harry Kemp have parted ways. Mrs Sinclair is at her brother’s home on West Eighty-seventh Street and separated from Kemp for several days. Parents told her she might return home, but they would not have the poet around. Kemp’s exact whereabouts are unclear.

Taft visit sparks bomb plot arrest in Newark

William F. Meyers, believed demented, was seized in the Newark courthouse crowd after President Taft arrived. He boasted of dynamite in two boxes to blow up the building. two cell batteries and hundreds of envelopes were found when opened at the police station. Meyers to be examined on the threat. Fire devastates a block of buildings on West Street in New York, with losses around 290000.

Miners Rescued After 24 Hours in Fairmount Mine

Fifty miners entombed at Fairmount Coal mine in Danville HY were rescued after rescuers cleared ice and debris from the air shaft. One by one they were hoisted to the surface as wives and children watched and aided with picks and shovels. The cage broke, trapping the men in a 200-foot shaft amid cold, exhaustion, and hunger. Food was lowered to sustain them during the long vigil.
