Clinton Luker was arrested at Effingham on a charge that he abducted 15 year old Miss Lucile Goar of Mattoon Illinois by coercing her to elope. He sought a marriage license in several Indiana places but failed due to her age. A warrant was sworn in Mattoon for abduction.
Seven year old Hazel Jones of Metcalf was instantly killed when her 11 year old brother Eddie accidentally discharged a target rifle. The bullet entered her forehead and pierced the brain in the family home.
Reports from bee men indicate more than half of central Illinois bee colonies perished in the severe winter. The honey crop is expected to fall well short of the normal output.

London April 14 Daily Telegraph telegraphs from Wel-Hal-Wel that at 5:45 am on Wednesday five Japanese warships engaged the Russian Bayan as they approached Port Arthur from the Yalu. The Askold and another Russian cruiser went from Port Arthur to aid Bayan. By 6:45 am the Russians found shelter behind the forts and Bayan appeared damaged with steam escaping. At eight o'clock the Japanese ships unleashed heavy gunfire on the forts.
News confirms the death of Admiral Makaroff and the sinking of the battleship Petropavlovsk during the battle between the Russian squadron led by Makaroff and the Japanese fleet under Togo off Port Arthur at daylight Wednesday morning. The military censor ordered an extraordinary session to review dispatches. A requiem for the admiral and crew was announced for Thursday at the Admiralty church.
