Increase in Tuberculosis Upstate Linked to War Factors
Dr. Robert E. Plunkett of Troy reported an upstate New York rise in tuberculosis tied to war conditions. In the first seven months there were 1,349 deaths, 39 more than 1942, and 4,442 new cases in eight months, 192 higher than last year. Overwork fatigue and overcrowding contribute, but mass X-ray efforts in the armed forces and industry may reveal more cases. Hospital utilization fell about 20 percent from 1942 to 1943, prompting calls for new prevention and control methods.
