Country Bankers Protest New Deal Lending Fight
About 2,000 bankers from across the country pressed the American Bankers Association to oppose government funded lending and non bank lenders in the postwar era. The small bank faction sought to force a stronger protest against Washington policies, arguing subsidies and bureaucratic vices boost government lenders. Officials from Nebraska Indiana Pennsylvania backed the stance while supporters warned timing was poor for a broad attack. Claude Pack of Home State Bank Kansas City urged modernization to survive the transition from war to peace and advised banks to work with customers on practical reforms.

New OPA Management Shows Change
Bowles arrived as OPA general manager on July 27 and within six weeks promised progress in cleaning up the agency. Congress, on vacation, muted protests while mail from lawmakers flood the office. Bowles reshapes policy by expanding industry advisory councils, shifting top posts away from professors, decentralizing authority, and trimming price rules under the Taft amendment. He vows strict price control and clearer regulations, while reorganizing the legal division and centralizing consumer goods regulation.
