War Prisoners Refuse Corn While Relish American Dishes
At Fort Niagara in the German POW camp about 1,899 prisoners, including officers, are supervised by Col Herbert D. Forrest. They work on nearby farms or in eight branches across Western New York. The inmates, aged 15 to 64 with distinctive foggy hair, mostly refuse corn and prefer potatoes and ice cream, though ice cream is scarce for POWs. Maj Willem H L McClure notes the camp has few incidents and prisoners are easy to manage. The compound resembles a village near the 1728 Fort Niagara site, with clean barracks decorated by American pinups and pictures.
