Berkeley scientists disclose the 1952 Pacific hydrogen bomb blast produced two new elements, Einstein ium and Fermium, named after Albert Einstein and Enrico Fermi. Discovery was via neutron bombardment of uranium 238 in joint UC Radiation Laboratory and AEC labs.
A joint letter from researchers outlines a 1952 explosive device using a core of uranium 235 or plutonium, a hydrogen jacket, and an outer layer of ordinary uranium 238. New elements detected in the Pacific blast were later produced and identified at cyclotron labs, atomic reactors in Idaho, and Los Alamos.
Hoosick Falls welcomes Reynolds Tool & Die Co Inc as it completes its fourth week in a modern facility on the North Hoosick Walloomsac road. Frank A. Reynolds leads as president and GM with his father Frank M. Reynolds and brother Howard overseeing operations. The plant employs 15 now with plans for 20 and then 25 workers.

Anti communist groups working with Soviet emigres report a Moscow led propaganda drive targeting Russian born Americans and Canadians to return home. Officials call the effort a fiasco but say letters and pamphlets reach newcomers in the United States and Canada.
A Chicago analysis shows that over 40 percent of the nation's home mortgage debt is insured or guaranteed by the Federal Government. At the start of 1955 the mortgage debt was 75.9 billion dollars, with 32.1 billion (42.3 percent) federally insured. In 1940 the government insured 23 percent, rising to 23 percent by 1945.
