New Elements Einsteinium and Fermium Reported From H-Bomb Test
Berkeley scientists disclose the 1952 Pacific hydrogen bomb blast produced two new elements, Einstein ium and Fermium, named after Albert Einstein and Enrico Fermi. Discovery was via neutron bombardment of uranium 238 in joint UC Radiation Laboratory and AEC labs.

A joint letter from researchers outlines a 1952 explosive device using a core of uranium 235 or plutonium, a hydrogen jacket, and an outer layer of ordinary uranium 238.
