Idaho potato crop may rot in fields amid shortages
Idaho farmers have expanded plantings by 60 000 acres hoping for a bumper harvest. Labor equipment storage and transportation are likely to be inadequate for the crop and Railroads cannot guarantee enough freight cars. About 230 new diggers are allocated but many may not arrive until late harvest. If farmers cooperate and use federal facilities the crop could reach markets. Harvest peaks in late September and October as schools adjust to harvest vacations.
