Escaped prisoner charged with four felonies in Albany

Guilty pleas entered by two Rensselaer men
Brian D. Smith of 1513 and Lt. Stephen V. Klimek of 81 2nd St pleaded guilty in Rensselaer City Court after being arrested for having an open container of alcohol in a public place. Police say they were arrested at 7 30 p.m. Wednesday in the 1600 block of Second Street and both received conditional discharges.

School contract vote expected on Tuesday
RENSSELAER The Civil Service Employees Association representing the district non instructional staff is set to vote Tuesday night on a tentative contract reached Wednesday with the Rensselaer School District. CSEA negotiator William Lochner said he is hopeful the general membership will accept the memorandum of agreement. Radioactive spill in Northway Mall after truck crash
State Police say boxes of radioactive material spilled on the Northway mall after a truck overturned near Exit 17 when driver Andrew Smith 23 of Villa St Pierre Quebec fell asleep. No danger reported. The substance Molybdenum-99 used in brain scans remained contained in two broken boxes and no injuries were reported.

Hoosick boy loses foot in train hitching accident
A 16 year old North Hoosick resident Dennis McCarthy lost his foot while attempting to hitch a ride on a moving train. He was transported to Putnam Memorial Hospital in Bennington Vermont by the Hoosick Rescue Squad where the amputation was performed. He was reported in satisfactory condition the next morning.

Auto stolen on East Street found burning on Broadway
Rensselaer police reported a car stolen from East Street near Fourth Avenue Thursday night was found later that evening ablaze in the rear of 1417 Broadway. Donald Blowers said his wife parked it at St Johns Bingo between 7 and 10 22 p m. The fire was found at 10 33 p m and the car destroyed. An infant car seat valued at 30 dollars was stolen from Robert Soika’s car earlier Thursday.
