Cohoes Mayor Ronald Canestrari told the Common Council the city must fund unemployment insurance under a new federal mandate. The plan requires dollar-for-dollar matching of state benefits, with an estimated $20,000 extra in next year’s budget, chosen over a payroll tax option as more costly.
Two Cohoes teens were hospitalized after a fall down an elevator shaft at Barclay Home Products on North Mohawk Street. Mark Roberts, 17, in fair condition with elbow injuries, and Vance Marsett, 16, treated and released. the accident happened on the fifth floor as workers moved material and a gate failed. The plastic cushioning reduced potential severity.
Judge Walter Burke presided as John Bentley 35 of 5 Waitenall St Conoes pleaded guilty to criminal trespass and received a conditional discharge after a fourth degree charge. Daniel Lewis 26 of 264 Speigletown Rd Troy pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and to pay a $100 fine. The Class of 1967 at Cohoes High School plans a reunion at the Cohoes Moose Club on Nov 26 with reservations due by Nov 19 contacting Sue Gaynor Tira Knothe or Bob Cohowski.
Albany Arbor Hill children aged 7 to 10 will be paired with University at Albany students for a Halloween party at Beverwyck Hall on the Dutch Quadrangle from 11 a.m. to 3 30 p.m. Saturday. Activities include games trick or treating movies and cake and cider. Nora Donohue senior nursing student from Brooklyn coordinates.
Frank S. Lyons of Albany Medical Center’s board of governors is named chairman of the Foundation’s 1977 78 annual fund. He has led Roskin Brothers Inc and previously led the Albany Community Chest. The foundation coordinates the hospital college and satellite fundraising and seeks capital and deferred gift programs.
The Albany Public Main Library hosts the second Arts on Film showing at 7 p.m. today. Free admission, featuring photography films including Ansel Adams The Weapons of Gordon Parks Magic World of Kare Zeman Prehistoric Journey the Fabulous World of Jules Verne and Baron Munchausen in cooperation with East Bank Cultural Resources Inc.
Volunteers from the American Cancer Society will gather at the John House Memorial from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday to make pads for area cancer victims with a noon beverage. The Cohoes Civil Service Commission announces a Dec 3 written exam for one engineering technician post with a $9 000 salary and Nov 2 filing deadline. Applicants must be state residents four months before the test and Cohoes residents get preference. duties include basic technical support on public works projects and drafting surveying. Minimum qualifications combine high school, geometry or trigonometry courses, or one year helper experience.
The Cohoes Public Library invites residents to a free metric workshop on Thursday November 3 at 7 30 p m led by Gail Bromley from the Cooperative Extension Home Economics program. Attendees will learn basic metric use and try scales measuring cups and spoons and thermometers. Sign up at the library desk or by phone. library at 169 Mohawk Street.
Final plans for a Halloween party are set at a 7 30 p m Friday meeting of the Dr Jay McDonald Towers Senior Citizens Association. The event will be at 7 p m Saturday in the community room with prizes for prettiest most original and funniest costumes. Helen Langlois chairs the event.
