Sails to Capture Solar Energy for Space Power
Norman Barnes of General Electric and the Engineering Society of Detroit spoke on Wednesday night about using solar sails to boost power for interplanetary travel. He noted the extra power factor is a major challenge for fuel researchers, as conventional fuels waste energy after launch. A sail’s light weight and free solar energy could extend missions beyond Earth’s orbit to distant planets.
