Bombing of Rabaul and Liberator battle over harbor
United Press dispatch from William C. Wilson reports a bombing run over Rabaul Harbor by a Liberator crew led by Lieut Richard J McMullen. Despite heavy anti aircraft and fighter opposition, the crew scored a direct hit on a destroyer and near misses on two others. The bomber sustained multiple wounds and one engine out, yet McMullen steered a crash landing on a Pacific island. Other crew members include Second Lieut Chir Snyder and co pilot Flying Officer John Helms. The attack occurred amid intense air combat with Zeros and enemy fighters, with several planes shot down or damaged during a 30 minute dogfight. The crew later was rescued by another Liberator piloted by Lieut Allen G Hart.
