Italian Official On Trial for Life
Rome governor Vincenzo Abbolini former governor of the Bank of Italy stands trial for his life before the high court, denying charges of transferring 226 tons of gold to the Germans. He says he fought Nazi decrees and kept money printing under control during the occupation. The gold was shipped to northern Italy in September 1963 by Hitler and Mussolini's orders to avoid bombardment, he claims, with Badoglio advising a move toward the Swiss border. He says he opposed relocation and notes a Nazi ultimatum led to a bank directorate meeting but nothing could be done. The court faces up to the same punishment as Pietro Carzzi after a prior case.
