Postwar Navy Emphasizes Battleships Over Carriers
The Navy plans a postwar fleet balancing carriers and battleships, reducing large carrier numbers to under one third while keeping battleship counts near current levels. By July 1, 1946, 20 aircraft carriers were afloat with nine under construction, 3 CVBs building, and 1 commissioned. 93 battleships remained with 2 in progress. The shift stresses a peacetime carrier force around ten ships and about two dozen battleships despite aviation’s wartime prominence.
