Group Approves Bill To Let War Refugee Remain in Country
Henry White, a 16 year old Chinese refugee who lived as a bar drudge in Singapore and a Japanese camp interne, praises a House immigration committee vote allowing him permanent U.S. residence. Adopted by Kenneth M. White of Portland, Henry recalls his escape via Gripsheim to New York in 1942 and his later schooling, now at Belmont High with ROTC. Children in Greece Fight Dogs for Food
George Extinaris, former Greek Cabinet member, said yesterday that children in northern Greece were fighting dogs for scraps of food and warned of a deeper famine this winter. He cited the 1942 death rate in Athens and said Allied victories sparked renewed food use from hiding stores. Greece receives monthly cereal from Canada and vegetables from the United States but needs meat or fish and rice to ease shortages. Sir Percy Wyndham, a veteran British diplomat, died aged 79 after a long service including posts in Washington, Caracas, and as minister to Colombia.
