Torture claim and bribery trial adjourned amid witness trouble
The trial of suspended State Polo Serge. David J Soule faced an adjournment after the state said an unidentified witness could not be produced. Special Prosecutor Edward W. Scully paused proceedings until 10 am. Soule testified that beetles were poked down his back by troopers at Hawthorne barracks in what he called a torture chamber. Five troopers denied the torture claim, including Capt. John A. Gaffney and Lt. Everett C. Updike. Soule read a statement alleging $1300 from Earl C Stacks in 1941 and $1500 in 1942 with later cash loans, while Stacks faces bribery and forgery charges. Soule admitted loaning money and giving two women funds in 1942. A separate note noted a stolen motorcycle report filed by Charles Menges.
