Desegregation Bill Advances In House Without Busing Ban
The House Education and Labor Committee approved Nixon’s school desegregation bill without the proposed ban on busing. The panel watered down and killed an amendment to bar districts from using any of the 1.5 billion dollars authorized to bus pupils. The bill passed 24 to 3 and moves toward a floor showdown amid a Senate version from April. Reps. James G. O'Hara and William D. Ford supported the measure.
