Long War Ahead Patterson tells union delegates
Undersecretary of War Robert Patterson told the eighth convention of the United Automobile Workers that optimism for a quick Allied victory lacks basis in fact. He warned of a long, hard struggle ahead and praised Army and Navy efforts in the South and Southwest Pacific while noting Tokyo remains strong in war production. He stressed the need for total national effort to defeat Germany and Japan and cited industrial might as America's main advantage. He also noted possible opposition to R. J. Thomas's reelection and delegates supporting Norman R. Matthewis in the Detroit Local 190 caucus.
