Ground Forces Face Ample Supplies Despite Cuts

Washington reports Lt Gen LeRoy Lutes said the Army has enough principal equipment for a year, with plans to mobilize once mobilization begins. He noted 40,000 reserve vehicles were declared surplus in June and 10,000 more planned, raising costs to maintain storage. Air Forces warn of slower mobilization due to budget cuts, scrapping over 60,000 aircraft and leaving about 18,000 in service. Lutes emphasized need for vehicles, weapons, and gear for civil defense and wartime logistics.

Politicians Split Over St Lawrence Seaway Issue

Albany reports suggest both major parties will avoid the St Lawrence Seaway tax question in the gubernatorial and senatorial contests. Dewey favors the project with Lehman wavering on support, while Mend opposes deepening the waterway. Assembly and public sentiment show divisions, with some Republicans backing the plan and Democrats split, causing a cautious political stance ahead of key votes.
