Knox Reports New Drive Against Japan

Secretary Knox described American Marines seizing three Gilbert islands as the start of a new Central Pacific campaign toward Japan. The objectives are to drive Japan from the Mandated Islands and shorten supply lines to the Southwest Pacific, enabling more rapid ship turns and greater troop movement. He noted heavy bombardment of Tarawa and Makin and diversionary attacks on nearby Marshalls, with no enemy fleet seen and the next major fleet concentration at Truk.
