Automobile Fatalities Show Increase in New York State
Women drivers in New York State were in 12 per cent more fatal accidents in 1949 than 1948 while men saw a 2.7 per cent rise. The State Motor Vehicle Bureau report notes men still formed the majority of drivers in both fatal and non fatal crashes and total miles driven by men far exceed those by women. Fatal incidents rose for women to 138 in 1949 from 87 in 1948. for men to 2084 from 2030. Non fatal accidents involved 125,026 men and 147,730 women, with women up 1,563 to 10,988. Drivers under 18 showed 30 fatal accidents, and underage drivers in non fatal crashes rose from 824 to 1417 after junior loan restrictions changes by the 149 Legislature and restored by the 1950 Legislature.
