Feeding Troops In China and India Faces Difficult Tasks
ENS Staff Correspondent James Brown reports Army medical authorities work with the Quartermaster Corps to keep American troops in China, Burma, and India properly fed. Powdered milk is shipped to address calcium deficiency, with two Indian dairies approved by the U S Army Medical Corps. Dehydrated foods comprise about two percent of the B ration, but require special prep and present handling challenges. In China all food must be boiled to prevent cholera and typhoid, with fresh fruit stewed and tomatoes boiled. Each soldier receives a vitamin A tablet daily, and Indian and Chinese cooks are trained to prepare American meals. Emergency rations include ten days of C ration and Dp Field Ration.
