Atomic bombs useless for canal construction says Groves
Major General Leslie Groves, head of the atomic bomb project, says atomic explosives cannot be used practically to excavate a canal. He explains controlled explosions at depth would be needed, radioactive fallout would impede work, and costs would outrun dynamite. He notes a bomb above ground would create a shallow crater, not a deep canal trench, while underground detonation could work but would leave long lasting radioactivity.
