Labor Board Offers Coal Settlement Details

The Labor Board outlines coal settlement concessions for miners including higher vacation pay, reclassification to raise pay for greasers and other low paid mine jobs, and that operators will cover tool costs while workers fund personal protective clothing. A proposed eight to fifteen cent daily saving per miner stems from tool cost shifts. A new expert commission would study safety, living conditions, and mine efficiency to improve six day operations, transport, and marketing. Labor members opposed a $2 wage hike, citing cost of living spikes and weak price regulation, while endorsing other board actions. Davis stated six day operations could raise annual miner income beyond previous levels.
