Fuel Rationing Tightens Across Nation Amid Shortages
The War Production Board plans a priority list to allocate scarce gasoline after a 40 percent cut. Delivery routes must be rearranged to avoid duplication. Private cars aren’t restricted yet, but Washington sees few stations and curtailed transit. WPB officials warn the 49 percent cap remains an emergency measure, not a temporary fix.

Possible sources of the bombers included Para Mushiro in the Kuriles or carriers behind fog banks in the North Pacific. Naval officials said Japanese resistance on Attu was crumbling and some enemy pockets were liquidated. Predict Chaos in Transport Forecasts 40 Percent Cut
A transportation leader notes plans for service curtailments of 10, 20, or 30 percent, but a 40 percent reduction is a surprise. Expert says 40 percent could remove slack time and still force rush-hour cuts due to jammed roads and increased patronage after a pleasure driving ban. The firm lacks equipment and manpower to handle a heavier load. Abram V. Louer remarks for Schenectady Railway Co. is also referenced.
