Troy area churches will recognize the Troy Area Council of Churches this Sunday. Council coordinator Mrs. Marie Mercer notes a 15 member board includes clergy and lay representatives. Projects include hospital chaplaincy, nursing home services, refugee family resettlement, a Bicentennial series, a young singles group, and clothing drives for Church World Service.
The Commission on Theology and Church Relations of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod adopts a report affirming government may apply the death penalty though not required to do so. It notes authorities can abuse the power, urges Christians to influence government with Law and Gospel while promoting compassion for victims and perpetrators.
Earl Cromie of 60 Eddys Lane established the St Nicholas Society in Troy directed to aid Troy area residents through Christian service. The group promotes a Legion of Mary Pilgrimage to Auriesville on June 13 with round trip tickets at O Connors Religious Store. Bus pickups are set for 10 am at Stanley s Department Store Third and State Streets 10 10 am St Mary s Church Third Street and Washington Streets 10 20 am St Joseph s Church Third and Jackson Streets. The bishop of the Albany Episcopal Diocese Rt Rev Wilbur Hogg endorses the society and chooses St Nicholas as patron for charitable outreach to children.
A Bicentennial strawberry festival will be held June 15 at Trinity United Methodist Church at Lark and Lancaster Streets. Sponsored by ZIPS, it supports Trinity United and local charitable institutions. The event runs 5 to 8 p.m. with homemade biscuits, locally grown strawberries, sit-down and take-out options, and tickets at the door.
