William Roberts of John Sr. in Rensselaer was arrested early Saturday on second degree assault third degree criminal mischief reckless endangerment and related sober charges. He was taken to the Rensselaer County Jail after 5 46 a m arrest. Christina Lawson filed the mischief complaint and Roberts faces traffic tickets for failure to comply stopping at a sign and speeding.
Police report Eleuterio H Landy of San Antonio was fined 50 dollars and ordered to restitution after pleading guilty to possession of stolen property. Other arrests include Carol E B Voth and Robert P Boyle on disorderly conduct at Dan s Inn and a rescue effort near Kinderhook Creek leaving Joseph Mackey hospitalized after a fall.
At Van Rensselaer Manor Bingo Day highlights 82 year old Jessie Lemka of East Greenbush and Harriett Wiegner of Troy among 100 volunteers. They help with cards, feeding, crafts, shopping, wheelchairs, and chapel services. A luncheon next Thursday, with Sally Catlin as speaker, will salute volunteers.
East Greenbush negotiations between the EGTA and the school district show a possible resumption tonight amid a monthlong stalemate. If no agreement is reached, fact-finding would be led by Sumner Shapiro, with 43 teaching positions at stake and budget details cited as a sticking point.
East Greenbush School Board voted to eliminate 43 teaching positions, about 30 full-time and 13 part-time, affecting K-12 programs. Health teaching and counseling would lose school nurse teachers replaced by RNs, with reductions in guidance, library staff, and several elective courses across multiple departments.
About 42 Schenectady sanitation workers are expected to receive pink slips today as the city aims to save about $300,000. A waste collection spokesman called the rumor reliable and noted the layoffs would affect roughly half the department and take effect in June.
A Sunday morning fire at 32 Second Ave in Rensselaer caused extensive smoke and minor water damage confined to the second floor hallway and closet. The building is owned by Cheryl Sourman with Nancy Reed’s family on the first floor and Margaret Moorhouse’s family on the second. No injuries were reported and the cause was not listed. Firefighters were on scene from 1:53 to 2:26 a.m.
The city of Rensselaer Democratic Committee and East Greenbush Democratic Committee back Green Island Town Supervisor Michael R. McNulty in the 106th District race. The joint endorsement cites party support across eight of nine towns, with McNulty challenging Republican Neil W. Kelleher.
Shay James Shay of Colonie and Laura Brown of Colonie were named valedictorian and salutatorian for Colonie Central High School 1976. Shay carries a 96.5 percent average over three and a half years and holds a Regents Scholarship. Brown has a 95.1 percent average and also earned a Regents scholarship. Both students participate in numerous school activities, according to Principal Bruce Crowder.
