Visher Ferry to open 600 acre nature preserve

Visher Ferry plans a nearly 600 acre nature sanctuary and historic preserve along the Mohawk River leased from the state DOT. The town will maintain trails for hiking biking canoeing and birdwatching while conserving wildlife near Clifton Park with volunteer support and matching state funds.

Fort Edward man killed in Warren County crash

A 22-year-old Fort Edward man died in a Sunday head-on collision on Route 9L near Dunhan's Lodge. The rider Thomas Smith and his 19-year-old passenger Sue Covell from Queensbury were aboard the motorcycle. Covell lost a leg and was listed in serious condition at Glens Falls Hospital. The other vehicle was driven by Florence McCondille, 78, of Cloverdale.

Meal on Wheels program outlines new officers

Southern Saratoga County Overton heads meals program in Mechanicville. The Meals on Wheels program delivering about 10 meals per day to clients in various stages of incapacitation elected officers for the coming year with Overton as president and a board including Beth Izzo and Louisa Delane. The group relies on volunteers, a nominal budget from donations, and serves 60 volunteers over 18 months, adding diabetic selections since March 1.

Exchange students sought for Shenendehowa year

Shenendehowa Central School Chapter of the American Field Service seeks a second host family for a German girl and a Venezuelan boy to join the next school year. Families may read two potential student applications and contact cochairman Charles D. Frier or Marilyn Adsit at Shenendehowa High School. This year two foreign exchange students are already hosted, Dorothy Sekwaler from Ghana and Slobodanka Karadzic from Yugoslavia.

Friends of Library election and community notices

The Shenendehowa Free Library hosts an officer election at 8 p.m. with an 8:30 p.m. program featuring exchange students Doroth y Ohui Sekwalor from Ghana and Slobodanka Karadzic from Yugoslavia. Also announced are spring tennis ladder plans, a June 4 mixed doubles tournament, upcoming church meetings, mother daughter dinner, senior job registrations, a horticultural program, cemetery association meeting, and a TV violence PTSA letter campaign.

Berlin water failure closes Berlin Central School and Cowee plant

Berlin's water pressure drop halted operations at Berlin Central Junior and Senior High School and at W. J. Cowee Inc. The town's pumps failed Sunday, a replacement arriving today, with normal pressure expected by afternoon. Fire risks noted but town fire department relies on its brook supply. The Cowee mill laid off about 150 workers as grades 8–12 were shut.

Hoosick road driving tests resume May 27

Hoosick Falls driving license road tests resume May 27 under Rensselaer County Clerk Edward Vielkind. Tests run 9 30 a m to 3 p m every other Friday and may extend to weekly in summer with more examiners.

Bates Promoted to Sergeant in U S Marine Corps

Hoosick Falls resident Marjorie M Bates has been promoted to sergeant in the U S Marine Corps. The Hoosick Falls Central School graduate of 1974 joined the Marines in September 1974 and is stationed at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego California.

Barron McKeon 26 of 11 Main St Hoosick Falls was arrested at 1130 am on the corner of Main and John Streets and charged with disorderly conduct. He was sentenced to six days in Rensselaer County Jail by Judge William Fitzpatrick.

Hoosick Falls Art Group Doubles Membership

The Hoosic Valley Art Association reports membership has doubled after reactivation this year and has received its IRS tax exemption certificate. Stoltzfus exhibition at Hoosac School boosted April activities. plans include a village art and crafts show for the 150th anniversary weekend. The next meeting is June 9. new members welcome. A separate Bike-A-Thon fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is set for Sunday at Wood Memorial Park with a two mile route and sponsorships available.
