McNamara Pushes Viet Nam Policy Before Senate
Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that without U.S. troop involvement South Vietnam might have fallen to the Communists and destabilized Southeast Asia. He cited continued North Vietnamese troop inflows and said the U.S. aims for a limited objective with minimal human cost, while Fulbright urged policy change and Morse pressed for stronger criticism of the administration. Lodge was to testify next, after meetings with Johnson aides and Viet Nam officials.
