Sweet Potatoes Need Acid Soil for Best Yield

Agricultural note explains sweet potatoes are not true potatoes, grown from thickened roots. It outlines root sprout propagation, vine cuttings, and care for two main types, with recommendations on planting in level ground or broad ridges and soil acidity for yields.

Sweet potato cultivation tips for high yields and soil needs

Start sweet potato plants in hotbeds or indoors and set 15 inches apart in rows 30 to 36 inches apart. Allow vines to grow freely, do not prune, and fertilize before planting with three to four pounds per 50 feet of row. Use a low nitrogen mix like 2 2 8 1 8 as common guidance, ensure friable soil, drain well, and prefer acidic soil to reduce skin diseases. A yield of about one and a half bushels per 100 feet is typical.
