Patriot Deferments and One Man Unions in Wartime

A satirical piece warns a returning serviceman of deferments enjoyed by union leaders like Joe Curran of the National Maritime Union and Lewis Merrill of the United Office and Professional Workers of America. It contrasts their claimed essential status with the ordinary soldier’s base pay and service, suggesting patriotic fervor masks political maneuvering during mobilization. The piece notes Curran’s and Merrill’s deferments and portrays their unions as powerful and influential in New Deal policy.
