State Code To Regulate Explosives
A new safety code for explosives will take effect statewide on July 1. William J. Picard, chairman of the State Board of Standards and Appeals, announced the rules covering military pyrotechnics such as illumining flares and incendiaries. The code aims to prevent disasters like the East Rochester incident last December. It bars jewelry and spark‑producing objects, bans silk wool or rayon clothing to reduce static, and requires separation walls and limited staff in rooms. It notes safeguards like remote machine start switches and interlocked doors. The article also notes eighth grade graduation plans for John Simpkins and Beverly Brown, with ceremonies on June 18, held separately from the high school.

Hess Reported Losing Mind In Confinement In England
Rudolf Hess, the wartime Nazi deputy, is described as a complete loss to the Allies and increasingly irrational in confinement at an English internment camp. He suffers fixed ideas about Russia and the need to unite to defeat the Soviets, while his health remains not bad but his grasp of reality weak. His wife’s status appears unclear, and he receives standard prisoner rations with limited reading material, though he shows little interest in reading.
