Venice Celebrates Allied Entry as Troops Enter City
Venetian crowds cheered Allied troops as British and New Zealand forces moved into Venice. The German garrison of about 600 offered little resistance while the city’s bridges, canals, and landmarks remained intact aside from harbor damage and a few shattered windows at San Marco. Soldiers relaxed with locals, gondolas sailed again, and remnants of fascist formations fled or hid as the city began its postwar spectacle.

Preference urged for WWII veterans in state division
Howard Whyte of Schenectady, executive secretary of the New York Council of Second World War Veterans Organizations, urged that World War II veterans receive hiring preference for the new State Veterans Affairs Division. In a letter to Director Howard D. Neary, Whyte argued many unemployed veterans of World War II deserve these positions, warning that hiring neo veterans could deprive WWII veterans of work.
