Nickel Beer War Hits Schenectady At Fretto's
An amid five cent beer dispute reaches Schenectady at Frettos on Fourth Avenue. Elio Matarazzo of the Tavern Owners Association says breweries may halt five cent beer. Frettos claims support for the public and notes strong weekend business. Mrs Josephine Lape, co proprietor of Frettos, defends the price while noting prewar earnings. An emergency meeting of the association shows unanimity against a price war and says local brewers oppose the move. An Albany attorney weighs legality of cutting beer supply. Sam's Tavern in NYC previously cut prices setting a precedent. Frettos previously advertised the five cent beer as here to stay.
