Refugee doctors face barriers in postwar Europe
Latvia, now a refugee in the French zone of Germany, with a Hungarian general practitioner freed by the U S Army from a Gestapo prison, and a Jewish Yugoslav psychiatrist who survived six Nazi camps, highlight a “without parallel” pool of skilled physicians in refugee camps. While many refugees are settled overseas, few countries admit refugee doctors due to competition fears and standards concerns. Some drift into unskilled labor or illicit practice while awaiting recognition, with Norway, the Netherlands, Venezuela, and Iran accepting small numbers, and the United States possible for some.
