Surrender of Jap Colors Breaks Tradition in Pacific

A Japanese infantry unit in Dutch New Guinea allegedly surrendered its regimental colors to U.S. troops, a historic break with a ritual that demanded the demise of colors with the regiment. The 162d Oregon Infantry received the flag and remnants of the banner from a sergeant, a gesture seen as potentially changing Tokyo's wartime etiquette. The Japanese attach deep cultural significance to the gold chrysanthemum emblem atop the standard, guarded during campaigns, with surrender considered an ultimate disgrace if the colors fall into enemy hands. The 222nd Imperial Japanese Army reportedly dwindled to eight officers and a small number of enlisted men remaining after battles.
