Northway Speed Limit To Be 65
The speed limit will rise to 65 mph on most completed sections of the Northway and North-South Expressway starting April 1. William S. Hults, chairman of the State Traffic Commission, said the 65 mph limit is realistic for the two expressways. About 90 miles will be affected, with the Northway connecting Albany to the Canadian border and the 68 miles between Syracuse and Watertown under the change. Hults cited engineering surveys showing 60 mph unsafe for this highway type and noted safety and convenience factors. The Thruway already carries a 65 mph limit, adopted three years earlier.
