New Georgia Governor Flays Talmadge Regime
Abani Ga. P Cov Melvin B. Thompson declared yesterday that Herman Talmadge and his associates no longer had the right to speak for the Democratic Party and branded the Talmadge-supported white supremacy legislation as fraud and control of elections. Thompson, addressing a silent joint session of the Legislature, argued no selfish group can exploit Georgia and warned that only fair, party-aligned measures should govern primaries and voting reform. He urged rapid passage of white primary bills and endorsed a 3 percent retail sales tax to fund expanded state services while signaling possible vetoes of Talmadge-signed measures unless resubmitted for Thompson’s approval.
